Jean Lab Conclusion
13 In this lab we asked the question, what concentration of bleach is best to fade the color out of new denim material in 10 minutes without visible damage to the fabric. We found that even in 100% concentration of bleach wouldn't damage the jeans very much. There were no holes or rips, but we only submerged them for one minute and let the sit out for 9 minutes. To stop the bleaching process, we soaked them in water for two minutes. According to UCSB Science Line, "Bleach interacts with the organic molecules by adding chlorine or oxygen to the compound which removes the bonds or even breaks up the molecule. This serves two purposes: the color is removed or greatly reduced, and the new sites increase the water solubility of the material, so it can often be removed by washing." http://scienceline.ucsb.edu/getkey.php?key=551 This data supported our claim because no holes were in the fabric and the jeans were a light color.
While our hypothesis was supported by our data, there could have been errors due to the fact that we put different amounts of jean squares in bleach for the 100% and 50% concentration of bleach. Therefore, some squares may have gotten a slightly higher concentration of bleach and a larger opportunity to lighten further. Because of this, the jean squares look slightly different and aren't all equal. Due to these errors, in future experiments I would recommend putting all three jean squares inside the bleach at once. Not only does it save time, but it also equalized the amount of bleach each of the jean squares get.
This lab was done to demonstrate the knowledge of the scientific process. From this lab I learned all of the steps of the scientific method which helps us understand the overall concept. The scientific method is used in all experiments and is very important to know as a scientist. The conclusion is very important because it is like a whole review of the experiment. Based on my experience from this lab, I can now understand all parts of the scientific method.
