Unit 6 Reflection

In this unit, we learned about biotechnology and bioethics. Some themes and essential understandings include how biotech can be applied to benifit us, how DNA is used in biotech, and how bioethics can come into play when biotech is involved. For example, we did a lab on gel electrophoresis which tells you how long a DNA strand is. Also, we did a lab on pGLO and saw bacteria light up because of the chemeical AMP and ARA.
This unit went pretty well, I felt like I understood a lot of it. During our pGLO lab, our group didn't get any results, so I consider that a minor setback and that experiance makes me want to be a lot more careful in labs to get the results that I want. The candy gel electrophoresis lab was also fun and we had a lot more sucesss. I've learned to trust who I'm working with a lot more and to give them the benifit of the doubt. I find the that I understand how bioethics is a really important factor in biotech as we gain more advanced technology. There's a fine line between what should be done and what we can do.
As mentioned before, we did two labs this unit. The candy eletrophoresis lab and the pGLO lab. In the candy electrophoresis lab, we took the color off candy and mixed it with DNA to see how long the strands were. It was pretty cool, we saw that the same colors were always the same length. In the pGLO lab, I thought we were going to have good results, but we didn't get any results, so I guess I have to make sure I do everything thoughly. http://jnleeblog.blogspot.com/2017/01/pglo-lab.html
I wonder about how far people in this generation with go with biotech and whether the people up top that control what they do will make sure to actually control them. I'm a bit concerned on what's going to happen with biotech, but also excited about what they're going to manage to think of.
This unit was a bit hard to draw pictures and diagrams to understand it, but I did it for all of the labs and I think it really helped me. I also haven't done much procrastination, only on one lab conclusion and that didn't turn out well, so I'm not trying that again. Overall, I think this unit went really well.
